The Bauchi State Police Command has taken into custody a 24-year-old woman named Furera Abubakar, who is suspected of causing the death of a 4-day-old baby, the child of her co-wife.

The tragic incident unfolded in Bantu village within the Ningi Local Government area of the state.

According to a statement by SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the spokesperson for the command, the heart-wrenching event transpired on August 19, 2023, just days before the newborn was set to be named.

The infant, born on August 15, 2023, sadly lost his life due to alleged actions undertaken by Furera Abubakar.

Initial investigations indicate that Furera Abubakar is a co-wife to the mother of the newborn. The circumstances suggest her actions were driven by malicious intent.

Allegedly, the suspect entered the room where the baby was located and applied a liquid insecticide known as Gramalin to the baby's unhealed umbilical cord.

It is believed that the corrosive nature of the insecticide had a harmful effect on the baby's health, leading to his tragic passing.

In the words of SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil;

“The incident was reported to the Ningi divisional police headquarters on the 19th of August, 2023 which revealed that the four-day-old baby was born on the 15th of August, 2023 and was murdered by the suspect Furera Abubakar on the 19th of August, 2023 before the naming ceremony,” the statement read.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a co-wife to The nursing mother (victim’s mother). The suspect entered the co-wife’s room with insecticide liquid (Gramalin) and applied it to the unhealed baby’s umbilical cord.

“The liquid which was suspected to be corrosively affected, and led to the deterioration of the baby’s health eventually led to his death.

“The investigation is discreetly ongoing, after which the suspect will be profiled and charged in court accordingly.”
