Belgian football star, Yannick Carrasco, expressed disappointment with Thibaut Courtois over his reaction to Romelu Lukaku being named captain during the Euro 2024 qualifiers match against Austria. The Real Madrid goalkeeper reportedly felt insulted by not being given the captain's armband for the game, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Courtois claimed that a knee problem prevented him from playing against Estonia, but coach Domenico Tedesco revealed that his frustration with the captaincy decision was the real reason behind his absence. Tedesco had planned to rotate the armband among different players, with Courtois set to be captain for the Estonia match. However, Courtois left the group without informing anyone, contradicting Tedesco's explanation and insisting that he left due to his injury. Carrasco, one of the senior players in the Belgian national team, expressed disappointment with Courtois' reaction and emphasized the importance of demonstrating leadership and a captain's personality regardless of who wears the armband. Matz Sels took Courtois' place in the subsequent game against Estonia, which Belgium won 3-0, putting them three points behind Group F leaders Austria with a game in hand.
