Erik ten Hag guided Manchester United to an impressive start in their pre-season tour, securing a 2-0 friendly win over Premier League rivals, Arsenal. The match took place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA, in front of a record crowd of 82,262 spectators.
Manchester United's new captain, Bruno Fernandes, opened the scoring with a long-range effort that Arsenal's goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, couldn't prevent. Soon after, Jadon Sancho doubled United's lead with a brilliant finish after taking advantage of Gabriel Magalhaes' mistake.
During the second half, Arsenal's Kai Havertz had a golden opportunity to score but failed to find the target with his header from a cross by Martin Odegaard.
In the penalty shootout that followed, United converted all five of their spot kicks, further compounding Arsenal's disappointing performance.
Arsenal had previously drawn 1-1 with Watford and FC Nurnberg in their pre-season matches. They still have upcoming games against Barcelona, Monaco, and Manchester City. The FA Community Shield against Premier League champions City is also on their schedule.
Manchester United's pre-season has been successful so far, having beaten Leeds and Lyon in earlier contests. They have more matches lined up against Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Wrexham this month. Next month, they will face Lens and Athletic Bilbao before the new Premier League season begins.
United has already signed Mason Mount and Andre Onana, with the latter not making the squad for the match against Arsenal.
