The Egyptian forward later had a goal disallowed for offside after a VAR review, and subsequently, the Blues equalized when Axel Disasi, Chelsea's £38.5 million summer acquisition from Monaco, capitalized on Ben Chilwell’s knock-on in the 37th minute.

Ben Chilwell came close to completing a remarkable first-half comeback just two minutes later, but his goal was annulled by VAR due to an offside decision after he rounded Alisson and slotted the ball into an unguarded net.

Throughout the second half, Chelsea asserted dominance, relentlessly challenging Liverpool's defense. However, Chelsea's attempts were repeatedly thwarted by the impressive performance of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who denied both Chilwell and debutant Nicolas Jackson.

Both teams had opportunities in stoppage time of the second half, with Liverpool's Darwin Nunez and Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk coming close to scoring.

Liverpool adopted a formation without a dedicated defensive midfielder, and the match highlighted their need to reinforce their squad with players like Caicedo or Romeo Lavia. John Henry, the club's owner, observed from the Stamford Bridge stands, witnessing his team struggle to contain the hosts on counterattacks. This experience will undoubtedly inform their efforts to enhance their defensive capabilities.

Chelsea's midfield concerns were less conspicuous, with Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher putting forth impressive performances throughout the game. Nevertheless, their offensive struggles from the previous season resurfaced as they failed to capitalize on several promising second-half opportunities.

While Mauricio Pochettino departs the match content with his team's display, Jurgen Klopp must address vulnerabilities in a system that frequently leaves Liverpool's defense exposed.
