Despite being favored, the European champions, known as the Lionesses, faced stiff competition from the 40th-ranked Super Falcons team. Nigeria exhibited impressive offensive play, causing concern for the English team on numerous occasions.

Notably, Ashleigh Plumptre, a standout player for the Super Falcons, had two crucial opportunities to score. In the 16th minute, her strike from beyond the box hit the crossbar, and a minute later, she forced a remarkable diving save from England's goalkeeper, Mary Earps.

Late in the match, England faced a setback as their top scorer, Lauren James, received a red card in the 87th minute for a stamp on Michelle Alozie after a tangle between the two players. This decision, prompted by VAR, marked England's first red card under coach Sarina Wiegman.

Subsequently, the game proceeded to a penalty shootout, where the Lionesses emerged victorious with a 4-2 score. Chloe Kelly, a substitute, secured the victory for England, following successful penalty kicks by Beth England, Rachel Daly, and Alex Greenwood. On the other hand, Nigeria's Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie missed their initial shots, placing the Super Falcons at a disadvantage in the shootout.

As a result of this outcome, Nigeria was eliminated from the World Cup by England, leaving Morocco as the sole remaining African team in the ongoing competition, following earlier eliminations of South Africa and Zambia.
