Nigeria has etched its name in history by becoming the first African country to produce both male and female Best Players of the Year in the same edition of the CAF Awards. The prestigious ceremony, held in Marrakech, Morocco, witnessed the crowning of Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala as the recipients of the top prizes.
In a remarkable achievement, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen clinched the CAF African Player of the Year in the men's category, marking his first triumph. Osimhen's stellar performances, both in Italy and while representing the Super Eagles, played a pivotal role in securing the coveted prize.
The competition for the men's award was intense, featuring strong contenders such as Moroccan full-back Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian striker Mohammed Salah, who made it to the final three nominees.
On the women's front, Asisat Oshoala added another accolade to her illustrious career, securing the CAF Women's Player of the Year for an unprecedented sixth time. Oshoala played a crucial role in Barcelona women's Champions League victory last season, finishing as the club's top scorer with an impressive 27 goals across all competitions.
The awards ceremony also recognized the collective excellence of Nigerian football, as the Super Falcons were named the Best Team of the Year. Chiamaka Nnadozie further contributed to the nation's success by being crowned the Best Goalkeeper of the Year.
Nigeria's double triumph at the CAF Awards underscores the nation's football prowess, celebrating the outstanding achievements of both male and female footballers on the continental stage. It stands as a testament to the talent and dedication of Nigerian athletes, solidifying the country's status as a football powerhouse in Africa.
