English footballer, Jude Bellingham, sent the Santiago Bernabeu into a frenzy with his dramatic 95th-minute goal, securing a thrilling victory for Real Madrid in a La Liga showdown against Getafe on Saturday, September 2.
This highly anticipated match marked Madrid's inaugural home game of the season at the newly-renovated Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, complete with its impressive retractable roof.
Prior to kick-off, members of Spain's triumphant Women's World Cup-winning team were honored on the pitch at the newly-revamped Bernabeu, receiving a guard of honor from both teams as a tribute.
However, Madrid's hopes took an early hit when Getafe seized the lead just 11 minutes into the game, courtesy of Borja Mayoral. The former Real Madrid forward capitalized on a defensive lapse, breaking forward to slot the ball past goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Rodrygo had a chance to respond moments later but sent his shot over the bar. Madrid was also awarded a penalty in the 24th minute when Bellingham was fouled in the box, only for VAR to overturn the decision.
David Soria pulled off a magnificent save to deny Luka Modric's diving header, tipping the effort over the crossbar. Joselu missed an opportunity, slicing an effort wide, but he later made amends by equalizing just two minutes into the second half, smashing the ball home after Getafe failed to clear their lines.
Substitute Toni Kroos had a golden opportunity to double Madrid's lead, but his shot thundered off the post. Dani Carvajal also came close but was denied by the woodwork.
Soria once again played the role of hero, making saves from Joselu and Rodrygo. However, it was Bellingham who stole the spotlight with a last-minute winner, taking advantage of Soria's fumble to calmly roll the ball into the bottom corner. This marked his fifth league goal since joining Madrid from Borussia Dortmund during the summer transfer window.
Jude Bellingham's remarkable achievement of scoring in every game this season has catapulted him to the top of La Liga's scoring charts with five goals. He now joins an elite group of players who have found the net in each of their first four Liga matches, a club that includes none other than Madrid's all-time leading goal scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo.
