Barcelona staged a remarkable comeback, overturning a 2-0 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg in the Women's Champions League final on Saturday, June 3.
The match started with Wolfsburg taking an early lead just two minutes and 57 seconds into the game, courtesy of an impressive strike from Ewa Pajor. Barcelona had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 13th minute, but Irene Paredes missed a free header at the back post.
Despite Wolfsburg's lead, Barcelona dominated the first half, constantly pressuring their opponent's defense. However, Wolfsburg extended their advantage to 2-0 shortly before halftime when Pajor turned provider, delivering a sensational cross into the box for Alexandra Popp to head home.
Barcelona quickly regrouped in the second half and reduced the deficit within three minutes. Caroline Graham Hansen displayed excellent skill to beat her marker before setting up Patricia Guijarro, who fired a powerful shot past Merle Frohms. Just two minutes later, Aitana Bonmati provided an assist for Guijarro once again, allowing her to secure her second goal of the match and equalize.
In the 70th minute, Barcelona completed their remarkable comeback as poor defending from Wolfsburg led to a chaotic situation in the box. Fridolina Rolfo took advantage of the confusion and found the back of the net, giving Barcelona a 3-2 lead.
This victory marked Barcelona's second Women's Champions League title in their history, having previously reached the final four times. On the other hand, Wolfsburg continues their quest for their first UWCL title since 2014.
Unfortunately, Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala, a star player for Barcelona, was unable to participate in the final due to a hamstring injury. Oshoala has been in exceptional form throughout the season, scoring 26 goals in all competitions, including five in the Champions League. The striker injured her left thigh, as confirmed by the club prior to the game.
The Women's Champions League final concluded the season for both clubs, and now many of the players will shift their focus to the upcoming 2023 Women's World Cup. With less than 50 days remaining until the tournament begins, several players from both Barcelona and Wolfsburg will represent their respective national teams during the group stages. The 2023 Women's World Cup will commence on July 20, with co-hosts New Zealand facing Norway and Australia welcoming Ireland.
