President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has offered words of reassurance to Nigerians, acknowledging the current economic difficulties while urging citizens to remain patient and hopeful. He likened the nation’s present struggles to the pain experienced during a “surgery,” explaining that while it may be uncomfortable, it is necessary for eventual recovery and healing. According to Tinubu, the discomfort Nigerians face today is a temporary phase that will pave the way for future growth, stability, and prosperity.
The President delivered this statement on Friday at the historic coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, in Oyo State. The event drew numerous traditional rulers, political leaders, and residents who gathered to witness the enthronement of the new monarch, making the occasion a significant blend of cultural heritage and contemporary governance discussion.
“The Economy Has Turned the Corner” – Tinubu
Speaking before a large gathering that included dignitaries and citizens, President Tinubu highlighted the resilience of the Nigerian economy and emphasized that the country had survived several economic challenges that once threatened to derail national growth. He noted that these trials were akin to undergoing a critical medical procedure: painful but essential for long-term health and progress.
“To many of you here present, today I am honoured and I’m very proud to give you the cheering news that the economy has turned the corner. There is a bright light at the end of the tunnel,” Tinubu declared. “Your suffering is the pain of a painful surgery. But it is now returned to the moment of growth and prosperity waiting for us ahead. Thank you for your perseverance. Thank you for your endurance.”
He further explained that ongoing reforms and economic measures introduced by his administration were designed to stabilize markets, stimulate growth, and create opportunities for citizens. Tinubu assured Nigerians that the difficulties of today were transitional, and with collective patience and cooperation, the country would soon enjoy the benefits of these policies.
Ladoja Appeals for Creation of Ibadan State
During the coronation, Oba Ladoja used the platform to make a high-profile appeal to President Tinubu, requesting the creation of Ibadan State before 2027. The monarch emphasized that this initiative was a key priority for the people of Ibadan and urged swift consideration by the federal government.
Speaking in Yoruba, Oba Ladoja conveyed the message from his people: “My people sent me a message to Mr President. Mr President, they said the creation of Ibadan State is their priority.” The request followed the ceremonial presentation of the staff and instrument of office, marking the official installation of Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who attended the coronation, praised Ladoja’s ascension as a historic milestone for Ibadan. He highlighted the cultural significance of the event and its contribution to fostering civic pride among the residents of the ancient city. “It is a great honour to join in celebrating the coronation and presentation of the Staff of Office to His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adewolu Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The joy and excitement that fill Ibadan today remind us of the importance of upholding our cherished traditions,” Makinde stated.
The coronation event also served as a platform for discussing regional aspirations and developmental priorities, reflecting the interplay between traditional leadership and modern governance. Observers noted that the combined messages from both the President and Oba Ladoja underlined the need for unity, resilience, and forward-looking policies that address both economic and political interests for the benefit of Nigerians and the people of Oyo State in particular.
