The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University b has officially spoken out concerning the heartbreaking death of a 100-level law student, Chioma Ajana, whose sudden passing has left the university community and the general public in deep shock and mourning.
Recall that the tragedy occurred on July 9, 2025, when the young law student reportedly lost her life under very unfortunate circumstances, sparking outrage and widespread concerns about the state of healthcare and student welfare within the institution.

Close sources revealed that Chioma Ajana had been battling health complications arising from diabetes. Sadly, it was reported that she could not gain timely access to her much-needed insulin medication, a delay that allegedly contributed to her untimely death. The situation has since raised serious questions about the efficiency and responsiveness of the University’s medical services.
In response to the growing backlash, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Arinze Umobi, publicly addressed the matter, describing the incident as both tragic and unacceptable. He announced stern disciplinary actions against those found wanting, including the three-month suspension of doctors, nurses, and security staff who were on duty at the University’s Medical Centre on the day of the unfortunate incident. These suspensions, according to him, will remain in place pending the conclusion of a full-scale investigation into the matter.
Additionally, the University management has also demanded the outright dismissal of the hostel supervisor who was in charge of the spare key that reportedly delayed access to Chioma’s room. The university further disclosed that it will be thoroughly re-evaluating its relationship with ELMADA Hostel, the private hostel facility where Chioma resided, to ensure that such lapses in student welfare and emergency response do not occur again.
The Acting Vice Chancellor, while addressing the students, parents, and stakeholders, reassured the university community of his commitment to prioritizing the health, safety, and overall well-being of all students. He emphasized that decisive measures will be taken not only to deliver justice for Chioma Ajana but also to prevent a recurrence of such a devastating tragedy in the future.
