In a recent statement, former Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign council, Doyin Okupe, expressed strong sentiments regarding the treatment of President Bola Tinubu by critics. During his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Okupe declared that the South West region will no longer remain passive while individuals insult Tinubu. He emphasized the importance of respect and unity in political discourse, suggesting that the South West will actively defend the presidency against derogatory remarks directed at Tinubu.
Okupe referred to Tinubu as the “apple in the eyes” of the South West, indicating the high regard in which he is held by the people of that region. “From now on, we are no longer going to keep quiet for people who think they can just insult Bola Tinubu,” he asserted. Okupe's comments highlight the loyalty and support Tinubu commands within his home region, reinforcing the idea that he should not be spoken about disdainfully.
While acknowledging the challenges facing many Nigerians under the current administration, Okupe insisted that there is no valid reason for the level of criticism directed at Tinubu. He stated, “Tinubu from the South West is the apple of our eyes. He is not doing wrong. If things are not looking well (now), they’ll look well because we know him.” This statement underscores a belief in Tinubu's potential to address and resolve the current difficulties, despite widespread dissatisfaction with his policies. Okupe's remarks reflect a commitment to rallying support for the president, even amidst the pain and struggles experienced by millions of Nigerians due to the policies of the Tinubu administration.
