On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu‘s administration presented 64 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to labor and student leaders at the State House in Abuja, marking a significant step in addressing the transportation needs of these groups.
This gesture fulfills the government’s promises made during negotiations on the new minimum wage and aims to ease the hardship faced by the public, particularly amidst rising costs of living and transportation challenges in the country.
It is worth noting that in July, President Tinubu had pledged to provide 36 CNG buses to labor unions across the country as part of his administration's commitment to supporting workers and improving their livelihoods.
The President made the announcement during his meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to discuss the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers, highlighting his administration's focus on worker welfare and social justice.
According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the move is part of broader efforts to ameliorate the high cost of living by providing reliable and affordable transportation options for workers and students.
He added that the 36 CNG-powered buses have a sitting capacity of 100 each, making them a practical solution for mass transit needs in urban areas, especially for those commuting to work or educational institutions.
The presentation of the buses, as promised, was done on behalf of the federal government by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, on Sunday, 29th September, during a ceremony attended by various stakeholders and representatives from labor and student groups.
