Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has made a bold declaration regarding the political orientation of the South-East region, particularly Ebonyi State, ahead of the 2027 presidential election. According to Umahi, the South-East has turned away from the Peter Obi-led OBIdient Movement, signaling a significant shift in allegiance towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This statement comes as a shock to many observers, considering the historical support the region has shown for the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Speaking on Saturday during the Ohanivo 2025 New Yam Festival in Onicha Local Government Area, Umahi addressed a large gathering, emphasizing that years of political marginalisation have made the people of the South-East more politically aware and discerning. He insisted that the citizens are no longer inclined to follow the OBIdient agenda blindly and have instead begun to recognize leaders who provide tangible development and a sense of inclusion.

“No More OBIdient Influence”

Umahi stated explicitly: “We are not OBIdient people. We have been so marginalised that we are no longer OBIdient. No, we are not. But it is the man that has given us a sense of belonging, President Bola Tinubu. Let it not be that we are from Ebonyi State and they are saying this state belongs to us. There is no OBIdient person in Ebonyi.”

He further highlighted that the people of the South-East have learned from past political experiences and will no longer be deceived by political promises alone. “The last election was a mistake, but we have come to be wiser,” he said. Umahi urged citizens to acknowledge the development and goodwill Tinubu has demonstrated towards the region, indicating that such concrete actions have influenced the shift in political loyalty.

Netizens Reactions…

News of Umahi’s declaration has generated widespread reactions across social media, with netizens expressing a variety of opinions, ranging from disbelief to sharp criticism. Rosemary Mosina Egedegbe commented, “Please speak for yourself because you have just one vote,” highlighting the limited influence one politician may have over the entire region’s electorate.

Stella Olatunji questioned, “Is Umahi the owner of South-East?” suggesting that the minister does not have the authority to speak on behalf of the entire region.

Justice Chukwukere reacted angrily: “God punish you there idiot can’t you see what dis yoruba’s goverment are doing to igbos slave like you David.” This remark reflects resentment towards Umahi’s alignment with Tinubu and a perception of betrayal by some members of the South-East community.

Sanni Shehu Shall added, “Stop lying to the president. You don’t have control over your people,” indicating skepticism about Umahi’s claims of shifting the region’s support. Similarly, Ibeawuchi Raymond remarked, “Umahi… Deliver your ward first,” emphasizing that local leadership performance should precede grand political statements.

Other reactions have recognized the political implications of Umahi’s alignment. Abu Iro noted, “Tinubu has gained strong political control or influence in the South-East because David Umahi, a key political figure from that region, has openly aligned himself with Tinubu.” This underscores how Umahi’s personal political choices could influence wider perceptions of Tinubu’s support base in the region.

Orodunsin Sunday added, “PBAT will not rely on South-East’s votes in 2027 so if they like they vote for or against him,” reflecting a pragmatic view that the region’s votes are no longer guaranteed to any particular candidate. Meanwhile, Tunde Ososanya wrote, “Dave Umahi is the only Igbo politician I can vote for from the east to be President,” showing that some citizens still see Umahi as a credible figure despite the controversy.

Ekene Anaebo issued a challenge: “Come to Main market Onitsha to say this without security,” pointing to potential backlash Umahi might face if he reiterates his statements publicly. In a similar tone, Uforo Udoekpo wrote, “Keep dreaming Oga minister,” dismissing the notion that Umahi’s declarations will translate into real political influence.

The minister’s statement and the ensuing reactions highlight a significant moment in South-East politics, indicating potential shifts in voter behavior and alliances as the 2027 presidential election approaches. Analysts suggest that while Umahi’s declaration may influence some segments of the electorate, widespread support for any candidate in the South-East remains uncertain, and the region’s voters will likely continue to evaluate political figures based on performance, promises, and trustworthiness rather than affiliations alone.
