President Tinubu responds to Port Harcourt helicopter crash

In response to the recent helicopter crash in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken immediate action, directing the military and relevant agencies to intensify rescue operations at the crash site. His directive reflects his commitment to ensuring that all necessary resources are deployed in an effort to locate any survivors and efficiently manage the aftermath of this tragic event.

The tragic incident, which occurred yesterday morning, involved a chartered helicopter, marked 5NBQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation Logistics Services Limited. The aircraft was carrying senior officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), heightening the significance of the accident and its impact on the community and the nation.

The helicopter had departed from the Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) and was headed to the NUIM ANTAN oil rig located near Bonny Finima. Tragically, the aircraft crashed approximately one kilometre from its destination at around 11:30 a.m., leaving the NNPCL officials and other passengers in critical danger.

In response to this tragic accident, President Tinubu issued an urgent directive late last night, calling on search and rescue teams to increase their speed and efficiency in reaching the crash site. His statement emphasized the importance of a coordinated response to swiftly locate survivors and effectively address the consequences of the incident.

A statement released through Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga emphasized President Tinubu’s instructions for the military officers engaged in various operations within the area to join the rescue mission and collaborate closely with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and other relevant agencies. This coordinated effort underscores the government's commitment to a comprehensive response to the incident.

The President also extended his condolences to the Board and staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) as well as to the families of those who lost their lives in the crash. His message conveyed a deep sense of sympathy for the bereaved, acknowledging the immense loss felt by the families and colleagues of the victims.

President Tinubu expressed his fervent prayers for the departed souls, asking that the Almighty God grant them eternal rest and provide comfort to their grieving families during this difficult time.
