The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State has officially appointed Adamu Bako, who previously served as the party's secretary, as its new chairman. This election took place during a congress that was held on Tuesday in Lafia, the state capital. Senator Simon Mwadkwon, who was overseeing the congress on behalf of the PDP National Committee, declared Bako the winner and lauded the transparency and fairness of the entire electoral process. The successful congress was a significant event for the party in the state, ensuring new leadership for the coming period.
In addition to the election of Bako as chairman, several other key party officials were elected to important positions. These included Kefas Danlami, who was appointed as the party's new Secretary, Yahaya Bunu, who was elected Treasurer, and Chinenege Muhammed, who was selected to serve as the State Publicity Secretary. Other appointments included Hannatu John, who was chosen as the State Women Leader, Bala Aron, who was named State Legal Adviser, and Awesu Abdullahi, who was designated as State Auditor. These elections were seen as a step toward strengthening the PDP's structure in the state and building a stronger network of leadership.
Furthermore, the vice-chairpersons for the three senatorial zones within the state were also elected. These include Marshin Shema representing the North, Isah Bala Mangi for the South, and Attahiru Osu Audu, who will serve as the vice-chairperson for the West. These regional appointments were made to ensure the party's representation and influence across the state's various regions.
During his first address as the newly elected chairman, Adamu Bako pledged to work toward resolving internal issues within the party and enhancing its overall influence and presence across the state. Bako emphasized the need for unity and strategic planning to strengthen the party’s position in upcoming political events. His leadership is expected to bring a new era of cohesion and focus to the PDP in Nasarawa State.
David Ombugadu, who was the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 governorship election, also expressed his appreciation for the fairness and transparency in executing the congress. He lauded the smooth process and voiced his support for the new leadership, signaling a positive future for the party in the state.
In other developments, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, the Founder and Life Member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), announced that the party’s Board of Trustees would convene on November 8, 2024, to discuss a recent court ruling. The ruling mandates the BoT to take over the management and administration of the NNPP, a significant decision that alters the party's leadership structure. The Abia High Court judgment directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transfer control of the NNPP to Aniebonam's Board of Trustees. This marks a crucial shift in the party’s internal governance, formally empowering Aniebonam, the party’s founder, and his team to steer the party’s strategic direction moving forward.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, Aniebonam, who is also the founder of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), confirmed the board's intention to comply with the court's "compelling order." He emphasized the importance of the upcoming meeting to deliberate on how to align the party's operations with the court's ruling and ensure that the party functions within its new leadership framework. Aniebonam's leadership will now play a central role in guiding the party’s future direction and decisions.
