Yakubu Maikyau, the president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for excellent performance in conducting the presidential and national assembly elections that recently took place. Maikyau praised INEC for delivering a successful election despite facing several challenges.
During an interview on Channels TV on Saturday, Maikyau expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the elections and stated that those who participated in the voting exercise were happy to express their franchise. He also acknowledged that there were some infractions that occurred during the election, some of which constituted electoral offenses. However, on the whole, he commended INEC for performing well in the delivery of the elections, giving them a score of 78-80%.
Despite the successful outcome of the election, Maikyau advised INEC to take deliberate efforts to ensure that the lapses that were identified during the February 25th election did not occur again in the upcoming March 11th elections. He noted that these lapses impacted the confidence of the public in the election process and recommended that INEC work to address them.
Overall, Maikyau's remarks signify the NBA's recognition and appreciation of INEC's efforts in conducting a successful election, while also emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement to maintain the integrity of future elections.
