The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has officially announced the arrest of lawmaker Alex Mascot Ikwechegh on Monday, who is currently under investigation for allegedly assaulting a cab driver named Stephen Abuwatseya in Abuja.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, Ikwechegh is presently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station following a formal complaint lodged by Abuwatseya regarding the incident.
Initial findings from the investigation indicate that the confrontation occurred during a delivery made to Ikwechegh’s residence. Reports suggest that a disagreement between the lawmaker and the driver escalated into a physical altercation, prompting the police's involvement.
Witnesses claimed that during the heated exchange, Ikwechegh allegedly responded to Abuwatseya’s attempts to involve law enforcement with a dismissive remark: “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.” This statement has raised eyebrows, as it reflects a concerning disregard for the authority of law enforcement, according to police sources.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. He emphasized that the Command is committed to conducting an impartial inquiry and that appropriate legal actions will be taken based on the investigation’s findings. The police have reassured the public that they will uphold justice and accountability, irrespective of an individual's status or position.
