Lagos APC leaders unaware of Tobun's speakership bid

One of the prominent leaders of the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abiodun Tobun, who serves as the lawmaker representing Epe I in the Lagos Assembly, has not yet informed the party leaders of his intention to challenge Mudashiru Obasa, the current Speaker, for the position of the 10th Lagos Assembly. This information was disclosed by Bashorun Olorunfunmi and Kaoli Olusanya, who are both GAC members and prominent figures within the Lagos APC.

Olorunfunmi and Olusanya confirmed that they became aware of Tobun's purported speakership bid through social media, just like other residents of the state. However, they denied having any knowledge of discussions or plans to support Tobun in his bid to unseat Obasa as the Speaker. These statements were made in response to a social media article with the headline: "Speakership crisis rocks Lagos Assembly as Abiodun Tobun leads race

According to the article, it was reported that the leaders of the Lagos APC had decided to prevent Obasa from seeking a third term as Speaker. It was believed that the party leaders, including Tajudeen Olusi, the head of the GAC, had met after the elections and agreed that the next Speaker should be a native of the region. The report also mentioned that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was not in favor of Obasa's attempt for a third term, considering the party's mood and his apparent criticism of the president's attitud

As a leader in Lagos East, Olorunfunmi stated that he had not been informed about Tobun's aspirations by the lawmaker himself or the party. Olusanya added that he had not been informed about Tobun's desire to become a Speaker either. He emphasized that since the legislative branch is an independent entity, lawmakers have the freedom to choose their leader. However, he advised the lawmakers to carefully consider their options, especially in consultation with the party leadership, highlighting the democratic nature of Lagos APC and its internal mechanisms for handling issue

Governor Sanwo-Olu's spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, stated that the governor respects the concept of separation of powers and the independence of the legislative branch. Akosile dismissed the claim that the governor had any issues with Obasa or instigated any uprising in the Assembly, calling the author of the article "mischievous" and reaffirming the governor's cordial relationship with the Assembl

Seye Oladejo, another Lagos APC leader, urged the public to disregard any rumors they might have heard regarding the election of the 10th Assembly's leadership. He reassured that the party has a reliable internal system to address such matters, and when the time is right, the necessary steps will be taken, ensuring that the residents of Lagos are made aware of the next Speaker.
