The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced that the Anambra governorship election is set to take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025. During a gathering with political party representatives at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, October 17, the national chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, announced that the upcoming election is scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025. He explained that this decision follows the timeline set by the previous governorship election, which was held on November 6, 2021, and highlighted that, by the effluxion of time, the governorship election is now due next year.
Prof. Yakubu stated, “Consequently, the Commission has approved that the 2025 Anambra State Governorship election will hold on Saturday 8th November 2025.” He further elaborated on the procedural steps leading up to the election, indicating that in compliance with the mandatory requirement of 360 days, the formal notice for the election will be published on November 13, 2024.
He provided additional details about the election process, noting that party primaries are scheduled to be held from March 20, 2025, to April 10, 2025. Furthermore, the candidate nomination portal is set to open at 9:00 am on April 18, 2025, and will close at 6:00 pm on May 12, 2025. The final list of candidates will be published on June 9, 2025.
Prof. Yakubu also outlined the timeline for political campaigning, stating that public campaigning by political parties will commence on June 11, 2025, and will conclude at midnight on November 6, 2025. Voting will take place in all the 5,720 polling units across the state on the scheduled election date of November 8, 2025.
“In the coming weeks, the Commission will provide details of other electoral activities, including the registration of new voters, transfer of voters, and the replacement of lost or damaged PVCs,” he added, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to a transparent and efficient electoral process.
