Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Adebola Ayinde Hamzat as the new commander of Zone 16 Command of the Nigerian Police, headquartered in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. This significant appointment marks a new chapter for the command, which plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order in the region.
According to reports, this announcement was made in a statement by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Emonena Gunn, on Tuesday. Gunn stated that Hamzat’s appointment comes following the retirement of the former AIG, Paul Alifa Omata. This transition highlights the ongoing changes within the leadership of the Nigerian Police Force aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and effectiveness in addressing the security challenges faced in the area.
The statement said: “AIG Adebola Ayinde Hamzat, an indigene of Ifelodun L.G.A of Kwara State, was commissioned into the Nigeria Police Force as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on 18th May 1992. His long-standing dedication to duty reflects his commitment to the principles of justice and public safety.”
“He is a graduate of Sociology from the University of Ilorin and holds a Masters in Conflict Management & Peace Studies, Unijos and a PhD in Peace and Development Studies from Unilorin. These academic credentials, combined with his practical experience, position him as a well-rounded leader capable of tackling complex issues related to security and community relations.”

Gunn said Hamzat has served in different capacities in the police force and globally. His diverse experience not only enhances his professional capabilities but also enriches the Nigerian Police Force with best practices drawn from his international engagements.
“He is a well-known investigator and intelligence professional whose operational experience and core intelligence abilities earned him commendable duty tours in the United Nations Missions in Kosovo (UNMIK) and Timor Leste (East Timor). His international experience equips him with unique insights into effective policing strategies that can be applied in various contexts.”
“Until his recent posting to the Zone as the 9th Zonal Commander, AIG Adebola Ayinde Hamzat was the immediate past AIG in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Nigeria Police Force. He also served as Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, and Commissioner of Police Border Patrol Force, respectively,” the statement added.
