Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has addressed the people of Rivers State in a statewide broadcast following the official conclusion of the six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The broadcast was not only a reflection of the trials faced during the turbulent period but also a reassurance of renewed hope, reconciliation, and the promise of stronger governance moving forward.
Fubara Reflects on Emergency Rule and Political Crisis
In his address, Governor Fubara acknowledged that the six-month period under emergency rule was “enormously challenging” for the state, describing it as one of the toughest times in the history of Rivers State’s democracy. He explained that the federal intervention became necessary due to the deepening political crisis that had threatened peace, stability, and governance in the state.
He extended his heartfelt gratitude to President Tinubu for playing a decisive role in brokering peace between all warring factions, including himself, former Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. According to Fubara, the President’s direct involvement created a pathway for dialogue, reconciliation, and a return to stability.
Fubara’s Full Speech Reads:
“My dear good people of Rivers State,
You will recall that our state was placed under a six-month emergency rule, declared by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the 18th of March, 2025. This extraordinary step was taken in response to the intense political crisis that engulfed our state and posed a serious threat to our democracy, peace, and stability.
There is no doubt that these last six months have been some of the most trying moments for our beloved state. As your Governor, I chose to abide by the declaration and cooperate fully with the President and the National Assembly, guided by my conviction that no sacrifice is too great when the peace, progress, and future of Rivers State are at stake.
I resisted the temptation and pressures to challenge the constitutionality of the state of emergency, the suspension of democratic institutions, and the other painful measures that came with it. My choice was based on the belief that the ultimate price of peace, unity, and reconciliation is far greater than the temporary discomfort of those decisions.
During this period, Mr. President graciously initiated and successfully brokered the peace process involving all stakeholders. Our leader, His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, the distinguished members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and I, as your Governor, collectively resolved to bury the hatchet and embrace peace and reconciliation in the overriding interest of our dear state.
We have all learned hard lessons from this turbulent experience. What lies ahead now is the responsibility for us — the Government, the Assembly, political leaders, and every stakeholder — to put aside our individual and political differences and work together to advance the greater good of Rivers State. The peace that has been restored must be protected and nurtured so that it becomes permanent.”
Commitment to Development and Governance
Governor Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State that his administration would immediately redirect its focus to governance and the completion of development projects across the state. He emphasized that the turbulence did not erase the achievements already recorded in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other sectors but acknowledged that there was lost time that must be recovered.
He pledged to work harmoniously with the Rivers State House of Assembly to strengthen governance and accelerate the economic and social progress of the state. Fubara promised that none of the projects initiated by his administration would be abandoned, as they are crucial for reviving the state’s economy and uplifting the wellbeing of Rivers residents.
Gratitude and Call for Unity
“On behalf of the Government and people of Rivers State, I extend my deepest gratitude to Mr. President for his fatherly role and decisive interventions. Personally, I reaffirm my loyalty, appreciation, and eternal gratitude to him for restoring full democratic governance to our dear state.”
He also acknowledged the concerns of those skeptical about the reconciliation process, admitting that fears and frustrations are valid but reminding citizens that “the costliest peace is still cheaper than the cheapest war.” He urged every resident to see this new chapter as a fresh beginning, marked by inclusivity, reconciliation, and collective determination to build a stronger and more peaceful Rivers State.
Finally, Governor Fubara thanked the resilient people of Rivers State for their patience, courage, and peaceful conduct throughout the six months of emergency rule. He assured them that his administration will not take their trust for granted and that every decision moving forward will be guided by humility, fear of God, and dedication to service.”
The broadcast ended with the governor’s heartfelt appeal for unity, reconciliation, and unwavering commitment from all citizens to prioritize the state’s collective interest above personal or political ambitions. Fubara described the moment as historic, a turning point, and a chance to rebuild Rivers State into a beacon of peace, stability, and development in Nigeria.
