The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced the payment of the second tranche of arrears owed to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members across the country, amounting to N44,000 each. This payment comes as part of the implementation of the newly approved N77,000 monthly allowance for serving corps members, a promise the government made earlier in the year to improve the welfare of those participating in the scheme.

The disbursement process, which started on Wednesday, is being executed in phases to ensure smooth distribution nationwide. This marks the second tranche of payments, following the initial release on June 3, 2025, when the first portion of the arrears was settled for corps members who had already completed part of their service period.

The arrears cover the period from July 2024 to March 2025, a timeframe during which many corps members had patiently awaited payment after months of delays and frustration. According to officials, all eligible corps members, including those who recently passed out, are included in this disbursement, as their bank details had been properly recorded for this purpose.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had on April 5, during the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, assured corps members that the new allowance would benefit both current and recently discharged members. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that the welfare of corps members remains a priority and urged them not to worry, assuring that payments would be made promptly once funds were released to the NYSC.

Several serving corps members have confirmed receipt of the payment, speaking to GistReel on condition of anonymity. They described the alerts as a pleasant surprise after the prolonged waiting period, highlighting the relief that the disbursement has brought to them and their families.

The ongoing payments are part of the government’s broader commitment to supporting the NYSC scheme and addressing the welfare of young Nigerians serving the nation. Officials have reiterated that subsequent tranches will be released as scheduled, ensuring that all eligible corps members receive their rightful allowances in full, thereby reinforcing transparency and accountability in the scheme’s financial management.
