Prominent Nigerian activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has attracted widespread attention online after vehemently criticizing the newly introduced petroleum tax in Nigeria, calling it an “evil system” designed to oppress and exploit citizens. His fiery remarks have sparked conversations across social media platforms, with many praising his boldness while others questioned the practicality of mass resistance.
In a video currently circulating widely on social media, Farotimi expressed his deep frustration over the common tendency of Nigerians to silently accept unfair policies without questioning them. He emphasized that the time has come for citizens to challenge unjust laws and to demand accountability from those in power. According to him, passive compliance only perpetuates exploitation and allows corrupt systems to thrive unchecked.

Farotimi explained that the original petroleum tax law was enacted during the period when fuel subsidy existed, and the revenue was intended to support the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in maintaining and improving federal roads across Nigeria. However, he alleged that over the years, these funds were misappropriated and looted by officials, leaving citizens to bear the brunt of mismanagement. He remarked on the historical context, noting, “When that law was made, there was fuel subsidy. That money was meant to go to FERMA for the maintenance of federal roads, but they’ve just been chopping the money. Now there’s no fuel subsidy again. Then petrol was like ₦100.”
During the video, Farotimi also called on fellow public figures and activists to join the movement against the policy. Specifically, he mentioned well-known figures such as Yele Sowore and Bello Galadanchi, urging them, along with every vocal activist in the country, to take a stand and resist the new taxation measure. He stressed that it is the responsibility of public-minded individuals to speak up and mobilize citizens against policies that threaten their welfare.
“At this point I’m going to be calling out Yele Sowore, Bello Galadanchi, I’m calling out each and every person who opens their mouth in the public space and say that they are activist. We must resist this fuel taxation. We must resist it,” he asserted passionately in the video, highlighting his determination to ensure that citizens do not passively accept the unfair law.
Farotimi’s statement has since ignited strong reactions across social media. While many Nigerians applauded his courage and promised to support collective action, others expressed skepticism, doubting whether resisting the petroleum tax would yield any meaningful results given the entrenched nature of governance and bureaucracy in Nigeria. Despite differing opinions, the discussion has amplified public awareness about the new taxation and the need for citizens to critically evaluate government policies.
