Former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, along with a former Speaker, may soon face disciplinary action from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun state for their alleged involvement in anti-party activities during the recent governorship and general elections in the state.
According to Tajudeen Lawal, the acting Chairman of the party, members who were found to have undermined the party's chances in the elections will soon be subjected to disciplinary measures.
Earlier, the party's elders caucus had urged Aregbesola, the former state governor, to offer a sincere apology for his actions as a way to reintegrate into the party, highlighting the APC's open-door policy for members with genuine intentions.
However, Lawal considered the elders' statement as mere advice, emphasizing that the party will take a definitive stance on the disciplinary measures against all individuals involved in sabotaging the party during the recent series of elections.
Lawal stated, "We are the party, and we know our members. We know those who voted for Tinubu and Oyetola during the last presidential and governorship elections. In due course, the party will reveal its resolution on the matter."
He further clarified, "We are not restructuring the party; the party remains intact in Osun under Baba Bisi Akande and Gboyega Oyetola. At the appropriate time, we will disclose our plans regarding those engaged in anti-party activities. Our people should exercise patience."
Dr. Ajibola Basiru, the former Senate Spokesperson, also urged Aregbesola and his followers, including former Speaker Najeem Salaam, to clarify why they failed to campaign or vote for the APC's candidates in the recent elections. He requested Aregbesola to publicly state his current affiliation with the APC.
Similarly, Remi Omowaiye, a former Commissioner for Works and Transport in the state, emphasized the need to punish those involved in anti-party activities before considering their reintegration into the party. He stressed the importance of sending a strong message to deter others with similar ambitions.
The situation concerning Aregbesola and the former Speaker has created a significant rift within the Osun state chapter of the APC. As the party evaluates the actions of its members and determines the appropriate disciplinary measures, the outcome will have implications for the political landscape in the region.
