A major tragedy has unfolded as Iran-backed Houthi Prime Minister, Ahmed al-Rahawi, was confirmed dead following a powerful Israeli airstrike that struck Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
The devastating strike, according to Yemeni Media, not only claimed the life of Ahmed al-Rahawi but also wiped out several top government officials who were reportedly in the same vicinity at the time of the attack. Among the casualties is Yemen’s Defence Minister, Mohamed al-Atifi, further deepening the crisis and sparking fresh concerns of escalating conflict in the already war-torn region.

Sources revealed that the targeted strike was part of Israel’s continued military operations against Iran-backed forces, as tensions between Tel Aviv and Tehran continue to spiral. The killing of al-Rahawi has been described as one of the most significant losses for the Houthi leadership in recent years, raising fears of heightened retaliation and instability across the Middle East.
This shocking development follows an earlier Israeli airstrike on August 11, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of several Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza. That attack claimed the life of respected correspondent Anas Al-Sharif along with four members of his team while they were on duty covering the conflict. The loss of Al-Sharif, who left behind his wife Bayan Khalid and two young children, Salah and Sham, drew global condemnation from media organizations and human rights groups alike.
Observers believe the back-to-back strikes mark a dangerous turning point in the ongoing Iran-Israel proxy war, which has increasingly spilled across borders, dragging in Yemen, Gaza, and other parts of the region. Analysts fear that with the assassination of Ahmed al-Rahawi, the Houthis may intensify their retaliatory attacks, further destabilizing the already fragile security situation.
