Nollywood actor and filmmaker Ugezu Ugezu criticized Ossai Ovie Success for his comments on the attire worn by Davido and Chioma in their pre-wedding photos.
You may recall that Ossai Success called out Davido for disrespecting the Igbo culture by dressing in a Yoruba attire with Chioma in their pre-wedding photos.
According to him, wearing the bride’s cultural attire is a gesture of respect and unity in Africa.
However, Ugezu refuted this claim, stating that no such custom exists in Igbo tradition. He added that no Igbo family would disapprove of their in-law for wearing attire from their own culture.
His words: “@ossaioviesuccessofficial… Please my brother, when you wish to talk about Ndigbo, say only the things you know…. or you ask questions. What you just said has no place in Igbo tradition. People can do that for the razzmatazz, but it is not rooted in culture to warrant a mention. No family in Igboland will frown at their inlaw because he dressed his root. One Love”

In his detailed response, Ugezu Ugezu emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting cultural traditions accurately. He noted that while certain practices might be popular or trendy, they do not necessarily reflect the true essence of a culture. Ugezu clarified that within Igbo tradition, there is no expectation or requirement for an in-law to wear the bride’s cultural attire. Such actions might be appreciated for their symbolic gesture, but they are not mandatory or deeply rooted in the customs of the Igbo people.
Ugezu further elaborated that unity and respect in African cultures come from mutual understanding and acceptance of each other’s backgrounds. He expressed concern that misrepresentations or misconceptions about cultural practices could lead to unnecessary conflicts or misunderstandings. By encouraging Ossai Ovie Success to speak only on matters he is knowledgeable about, or to seek accurate information when in doubt, Ugezu aimed to foster a more respectful and informed discourse about cultural traditions.
The Nollywood veteran's remarks resonated with many of his followers, who appreciated his effort to set the record straight. They agreed that cultural traditions should be portrayed accurately and that respect for one’s heritage is shown in various forms, not just through attire. Ugezu’s thoughtful and respectful approach to addressing the issue was praised as a model for how to handle cultural misunderstandings.
