Renowned Canadian rap artiste, Tory Lanez, has received a 10-year prison sentence following his conviction for shooting US musician, Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during an altercation.
The incident occurred after a party at media personality and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills residence on July 12, 2020. Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, shot Megan Thee Stallion, causing her injury.
The legal proceedings took place over two days, starting on Monday and concluding on Tuesday, resulting in the Canadian rapper receiving a 10-year prison term.
Lanez, aged 31, had entered a plea of not guilty on December 23rd to three felony charges: assault with a semi-automatic weapon, transportation of a loaded, unlicensed firearm, and grossly negligent discharge of a firearm.
Prior to the judge's verdict, Lanez addressed the court while clad in an orange jumpsuit. He expressed remorse for his actions and fully accepted responsibility for the 2020 incident.
In delivering the sentence, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford noted that it was “difficult to reconcile” the portrayal of Lanez by his friends and family throughout the trial as a caring father to a 6-year-old son and a benevolent and charitable individual, with the person who shot Megan five times.
Herriford added, “Sometimes good people do bad things. Actions have consequences, and there are no winners in this case.”
During the trial, Megan testified that Lanez had shouted at her to dance as she walked away from the SUV they had been traveling in after leaving a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s residence. He then fired the gun at the back of her feet. Megan had to undergo surgery to remove bullet fragments, and it was only months later that she revealed who had pulled the trigger.
