Nigerian activist, social media critic, and outspoken campaigner for justice, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as Verydarkman, has strongly condemned several individuals and institutions whom he believes failed to provide timely assistance and support to the late Ruth Otabor, the sister of Big Brother Naija winner Phyna. Ruth tragically passed away weeks after being involved in a severe accident with a Dangote Group truck near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, leaving family, friends, and fans in deep mourning.
Ruth’s death was officially confirmed on Sunday by Eko Solicitors & Advocates, acting on behalf of the Otabor family. She had been undergoing treatment for critical injuries sustained during the accident, which many had hoped could be mitigated through faster medical intervention and support from influential figures and organizations.
Reacting to the heartbreaking tragedy, Verydarkman publicly faulted President Bola Tinubu, the Dangote Group, and several Nigerians with notable social media influence, asserting that they failed to rally behind Ruth when she was still alive and in urgent need of advanced medical care. He emphasized that their lack of timely engagement and advocacy contributed to the preventable deterioration of her condition.
In a passionate and strongly worded video message shared on social media, Verydarkman said: “Phyna’s sister has finally kpai. Many people are now lending their voices to the RIP messages, but when we needed those voices to pressure Dangote to do the right thing, she spent 19 days in the hospital and many refused to post because it wouldn’t give them engagement. You bunch are hypocrites, may God forgive your souls. Nigeria has failed us. President Bola Tinubu, you have failed us all. And to Dangote Group, are you happy now? You had the time and resources to take that girl abroad for treatment.”
He further criticized the lack of proactive measures by influential figures and organizations at the time of Ruth’s hospitalization, highlighting the disparity between public sympathy expressed after her passing and the inaction while she was critically ill. Verydarkman urged Nigerians to reflect on the responsibility of those with influence to act decisively during emergencies, rather than waiting for tragedy to elicit reactionary messages of condolence.
The activist’s remarks came only hours after the Dangote Group issued a public condolence statement, expressing deep sadness over Ruth’s death and affirming that the company, along with its insurance partners, had been covering all medical and financial expenses arising from the accident. The company noted that arrangements had been made to transfer Ruth to India for advanced medical treatment, contingent on her doctors’ clearance, but unfortunately, she passed away before the process could be completed.
Verydarkman’s video has since sparked discussions on social media regarding the responsibility of public institutions, influential individuals, and corporate organizations to act promptly in critical situations, especially when lives are at stake. He called for accountability, transparency, and a re-evaluation of the role of social media advocacy in complementing real-world action to save lives.
