Pastor Blessed Uzochikwa, the senior pastor of The Waterbrook Church in Lagos and husband of award-winning gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, has taken to social media to express his grief over the tragic death of American conservative activist, Charlie Kirk. The cleric described the late activist as a man who lived with rare courage, deep convictions, and the willingness to stand boldly for his beliefs even when unpopular.
According to multiple reports, Charlie Kirk, aged 31, who was a close political ally of former US President Donald Trump and the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot dead during a heated debate at Utah Valley University, sending shockwaves across the political and religious world.

Reacting via his official Instagram page, Pastor Blessed highlighted what he most admired about Kirk, noting that the activist’s ability to stand firmly by his convictions regardless of opposition or criticism was a virtue worth honouring. He remarked that very few people in the world possess such strength of character and that Kirk’s boldness would be remembered for years to come.
“One thing I truly admire about Charlie Kirk is his clarity of convictions. Whether you agree with him or not, he never wavers; he boldly stands for what he believes in. That kind of courage is rare and worth honouring. RIP,” he wrote in his first post.
Blessed on Charlie Kirk’s Christian virtues

In another heartfelt tribute, Pastor Blessed described Kirk’s death as not only painful but also a reminder of how fleeting life can be. He emphasised that Kirk embodied strong values that aligned with Christian principles, such as courage, dignity, and moral fortitude, even if not everyone agreed with his political stances. He further called on people to remember the importance of living a life guided by virtues rather than public applause.
“The gruesome murder of Charlie is heartbreaking and painful. He was a man of strong values, reflecting courage, dignity, and Christian virtues. No one deserves to die in such a cruel way. May his soul rest in peace, and may the Lord comfort his loved ones in this time of grief. I pray that his killers will be found and brought to justice swiftly,” Pastor Blessed wrote in a follow-up post.
Reactions trailing Pastor Blessed’s tribute to late Charlie Kirk
However, his tribute did not go without criticism, as some Nigerians on social media questioned his decision to spotlight Kirk’s virtues while overlooking his controversies. The post quickly stirred debate across platforms, with people expressing sharply divided opinions.
p_yabahgirl reacted: “Is that the only good thing about him you can post, what’s about all of the terrible things he has done and said about others, please post those as well, Pastor!”

@aiv10 noted: “Pastor, I have to say this with love but also with truth: misrepresenting Charlie Kirk and using Christianity to cover it up is dangerous. Especially from the pulpit, and especially as a Black pastor, there’s a greater responsibility to discern before declaring a man ‘good.’ Charlie Kirk has a long record of harmful rhetoric — calling for more weapons while demonizing others for the same, dismissing the struggles of marginalized communities, and downplaying suffering in places like Gaza. To highlight only what sounds convenient and then dress it in the language of faith isn’t preaching Christ — it’s distorting Him. For anyone listening, this is why Scripture tells us to test the spirit and seek the whole truth. Christianity should never be used as a shield to excuse or sanitize destructive ideology. The gospel calls us higher than that.”
