At the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards, the organizers faced criticism as they played the late Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s track ‘Water’ while announcing South African singer, Tyla’s ‘Water’ as the winner of the first Best African Music Performance category.

On Sunday, the Recording Academy declared Tyla’s ‘Water’ as the recipient of the first-ever Best African Music Performance award.

Tyla won the category after surpassing tracks by Nigerian artists such as Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’

However, to the surprise of many, following the announcement, Fela’s timeless classic, ‘Water No Get Enemy,’ was played instead of Tyla’s sexually-themed mid-tempo track.

The late Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

This blunder triggered reactions from fans and music critics, particularly in Nigeria, with many criticizing the Recording Academy for the “silly mistake.”
