Yul Edochie had recently taken his divorced wife to the public eye, demanding the refund of her bride price and the relinquishment of his last name.

Responding to the situation, Mary expressed that while a mother has the liberty to change her name, she shouldn't be compelled to give her children a different name.

Emphasizing the time it takes to build a reputation, she noted Yul's request for a name change, especially considering his opposition to divorce.

Mary underscored the belief that changing one's name after marriage should be voluntary. She pointed out instances where some wives have contributed significantly to their family's reputation and suggested that forcing a name change might be akin to copyright infringement.

In her words: “If marriage ends, change of name should be optional Biko. Someone cannot build a Name for many years and he asked to change it just because Oga no wan do again.

“A mother shouldn’t be compelled to have a different name from her underaged kids. Except she is allowed to change their names too.

“Besides, some wives have been responsible for putting their surnames on the map. Asking them to drop it is like stealing her copyright. Except she wants to.”
