When questioned in an interview with the Punch about whether he considers himself a man of God, Okonkwo firmly responded that he identifies as a child of God rather than a man of God. He elaborated on his stance, citing his feeling of inadequacy to shoulder the significant responsibilities associated with being perceived as a man of God.

Expressing his concern, Okonkwo criticized the misuse of religion for personal gain, highlighting how some individuals claiming to be men of God exploit the faith and trust of their followers for material wealth and personal advantages.

Furthermore, Okonkwo voiced his deep reservations regarding the moral integrity of contemporary churches, suggesting that certain establishments have devolved into breeding grounds for immoral and nefarious activities. He went as far as to label these churches as "the devil’s headquarters," implying their complicity in fostering evil deeds.
