Popular music producer, Don Jazzy, recounts trying to sell Mo’hits Records, which he co-founded with Afrobeats music icon D’banj, for one million naira.
He opened up on this in a 2018 interview on Bounce Radio.
Don Jazzy said that he did make an unsuccessful attempt to sell the label when he was questioned if he had ever tried to sell Mo’hit records to renowned Nigerian music executive Obi Asika in the early days of the record for 1 million naira.
Speaking further, he stated that D’banj’s release of the track “Tongolo,” which brought him limelight but fell short of the anticipated financial gain, and thus this prompted an attempt to sell Mo’hit.
He clarified that their current financial situation played a role in the choice to sell Mo’hit to Obi Asika, the label head and founder of Storm Records, one of the largest labels in Nigeria at the time.
The music producer didn’t provide an explanation for why the transaction fell through, but it would turn out to be a lucky break for Mo’hit Records, which would go on to become extremely successful and attract a star-studded roster that included D’banj, Wande Coal, Dr. Sid, D’Prince, and K Switch. Don Jazzy would also go on to become a well-known music producer and the head of a very successful label.
