[p]Charly Boy's statement came in response to Soyinka's recent criticism of supporters of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Charly Boy admitted that he used to hold Soyinka in high regard, almost the same level of respect he had for his late father, Justice Oputa. However, Charly Boy has come to the realization that Wole Soyinka can never be the literary icon that Chinua Achebe was.

[p]Charly Boy lamented that many Nigerians who previously revered Soyinka would be disappointed by his recent political activities. In a post he made on Instagram, he stated: "The kind respect I had for this man was almost the kind of respect I had for my stainless father, The Socrates of the Supreme Court. It has finally dawned on me that Soyinka can never be the man Chinua Achebe was. Look at a man many Nigerians put on such a high pedestal reducing himself to a boyiboyi for criminal politicians. What a f..king big shame."
