Award-winning Nigerian singer Asake has once again stirred conversations online after speaking candidly about how humility and ego are perceived within the music industry.
The superstar noted that many people often misinterpret humility as weakness, while ego, on the other hand, tends to make fans and the general public value an artist even more. According to him, it is a paradox that artists must learn to navigate if they want to sustain influence and relevance in the industry.
Speaking further, Asake explained that most people are more fascinated by visible results than by the process it takes to achieve them. He stressed that trying too hard to show people the hard work behind success usually goes unnoticed and underappreciated. Instead, what truly matters to people is the final product — the hit songs, the sold-out shows, and the impact.
Sharing his thoughts, the artist said …
“As an artist, if you’re humble, they take you for granted. But if you have ego, they feel like you’re not accessible, and then they like you more. People would rather see what you’re doing than for you to explain it. They don’t really appreciate the process. Do what you need to do, let them see the results, and just go.”
Mixed reactions from fans and social media users
Asake’s statement has generated massive reactions from fans and netizens, with many agreeing with his perspective while others felt humility should still be upheld regardless of people’s interpretations.
@Igbeauxx commented: “I keep saying this, humility is a trap. As you grow, your ego and pride should grow with you, else people will take you for granted. Humility is often promoted by those who just want access to you when they shouldn’t have it. Don’t fall for that.”
@Kaygoldhim wrote: “This reminds me of when Wizkid once said, ‘Ma humble ooh.’ 😭 It’s a fact in this industry.”
@AlphaMike001 added: “Bruh isn’t even capping. You can use Davido as an example. If he wasn’t confident with ego, people would walk all over him.”
@StatsByGreyson also shared: “This isn’t just about being a music artiste, it’s about life generally. Set boundaries. When it’s business, keep it business. When it’s fun, keep it fun. Don’t give people hugs when you’re supposed to give them a handshake.”
Others, however, argued that humility is still an important virtue and that ego can sometimes alienate genuine supporters. The debate continues to trend across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok.
