Sanwo-Olu wins Lagos governorship election

Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress was re-elected as the Governor of Lagos State. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced his victory in the early hours of Monday, March 20, with Sanwo-Olu polling a total of 762,134 votes. His main challengers were Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, who got 312,329 votes, and Olajide ‘Jandor’ Adediran of the PDP, who polled 62,449 votes. INEC’s Returning officer, Adenike Oladiji, who announced the result said Mr Sanwo-Olu scored 25 percent of the total number of votes and also the highest number of votes in the race.

Moments after INEC’s declaration, Sanwo-Olu, in his acceptance speech, expressed his gratitude to the people of Lagos for re-electing him. He stated that Lagosians had made their voices heard and called on his fellow contestants to join hands with him to move Lagos forward. Sanwo-Olu also extended a hand of fellowship to his opponents, saying that there were no victors or vanquished in the election, and urged them to work with him in serving the people of Lagos. He emphasized that divisive rhetoric during the campaign was not reflective of the values of Lagosians, and urged everyone to come together to rebuild the capacity, competence, and experience of the city. Sanwo-Olu also stressed that religion and ethnicity should not divide the people of Lagos, and promised to make the city bigger, stronger, and better.
