A young Nigerian man has stirred mixed emotions online after making a heartfelt appeal for financial assistance to cover his mother’s urgent hospital bill, which he could not afford due to his heavy loss in sports betting.
The emotional plea was brought to public attention through a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @thomsincruz23. In his cry for help, he revealed that his mother’s hospital demanded ₦35,000 for her treatment. However, he was left stranded and helpless after losing a whopping ₦45,000 to online betting earlier in the day.
According to him, the situation has left him in a state of despair. He explained that he could not summon the courage to face the hospital, fearing that his inability to pay the outstanding bill might result in his mother losing her life. In his words, the young man admitted that his reckless gambling choices had landed him in the worst possible position at a time when his family needed him the most.
Sharing his ordeal, he wrote: “I don’t know what to do now. I just lost 45k to gambling today. Now I can’t even pay 35k for my mom’s hospital bills. I can’t even go to the hospital right now and my mom is dying. Somebody please help me, I don’t want to lose my mom.”
The post immediately spread across social media platforms, gathering wide traction and sparking heated conversations. While some users sympathized with his situation and expressed prayers for his mother’s recovery, others criticized his poor financial decisions and questioned why he would prioritize betting over his family’s wellbeing.
