Lagos Police has taken the decision to terminate the employment of Sergeant Ekpo Shinuyere for extorting N98K out of N100K from a young man's bank account.
Providing further details, the command's spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, released a statement stating that Sergeant Shinuyere had transferred N98,000 from the victim's account to his own.
According to Hundeyin, the sergeant used a roadside point of sale (POS) machine to carry out the transaction.
Upon receiving the extortion complaint, the victim reported the incident to the Lagos police. However, Sergeant Shinuyere denied all allegations. During the investigation, the authorities traced the POS operator who confirmed the incident. A copy of the sergeant's bank statement was also obtained from his bank as part of the investigation process.
To ensure the preservation of evidence, the officer was detained pending the completion of the investigation.
"The victim lodged a complaint, but the officer denied the crime when contacted. The command detained him to prevent tampering with evidence.
We contacted his bank and acquired his statement of account. We successfully traced the money transfer from the POS operator to the officer's account.
All necessary procedures were followed, including inviting the victim who provided testimony during the investigation. The POS operator was also summoned and confirmed that the officer had instructed the transfer of money from the victim's account to another account.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, of the Lagos command reviewed the orderly room procedure involving the officer with Force No. 461654, attached to Sogunle Police Division, and approved the dismissal of the officer from the force," stated Hundeyin in the official statement.
