The Ghana Football Association (GFA) makes an immediate decision to terminate Chris Hughton’s contract as head coach of the National team in the wake of Ghana’s premature exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
In an official statement released on Wednesday morning, the GFA Executive Council announces the dissolution of the technical team for the Black Stars, emphasizing the need for a fresh direction.
“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect. The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars. The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” the statement reads.
Ghana’s AFCON disappointment culminated in a surprising 2-2 draw against Mozambique, despite initially holding a 2-0 lead. Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew's brace from the penalty spot had given Ghana a comfortable advantage. However, Mozambique staged a remarkable comeback, scoring two late goals in stoppage time to secure a draw.
This unexpected outcome led to Ghana’s elimination from Group B, with Egypt surpassing them to secure qualification for the next stage of the tournament.
