Sen. Aisha Dahiru Binani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made history as Nigeria's second female governor after winning the governorship poll in her home state of Adamawa. The victory of Binani, who is a member of the Nigerian Senate, was announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yola, the state capital, on Sunday. Binani's closest rival, who was from the People's Democratic Party (PDP), scored 406,617 votes, while Binani garnered 409,909 votes, leading to her victory.
It is noteworthy that Adamawa State is also the home state of Atiku Abubakar, the PDP's Presidential Candidate for the 2023 elections. The win by Binani, a member of the opposition party, APC, is considered a significant achievement for the party.
Binani's election makes her the second woman to become a governor in Nigeria, following in the footsteps of Dame Virginia Etiaba of Anambra state, who served as governor from November 2006 to February 2007. Her victory has been celebrated as a significant milestone for gender equality in Nigerian politics, and it is hoped that it will inspire more women to participate in politics and aspire to leadership positions.
