She was 72 at the time of her passing.
During a condolence visit by the management of Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) to Onyeka Onwenu’s family in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, King Sunny Ade vowed to perpetuate her legacy by continuously performing their iconic duet, “Waiting for Me.” He committed to honoring her memory and keeping her legacy alive through his music until his own passing.
King Sunny Ade expressed his dedication, saying, “I will perform ‘Waiting for Me’ on her behalf throughout my life. I have done it several times in different countries, where I gave her the credit. When it comes to music that two people have to do together, she used to do more than I did. She would just tap me and say ‘Sunny, don’t worry, let’s take it this way,’ and it is always good.”[/p>
Orits Williki, a popular reggae legend, also paid tribute to Onyeka Onwenu, describing her as a staunch advocate for justice. He remarked, “She wasn’t somebody we can easily forget. It is sad that she did not reap much of what she fought for. Only a few years ago, she got a double Supreme Court judgment on intellectual property. But sad that we have lost her and we know that her legacy is still in our minds.”
